Random Acts of Kindness

… Let’s Do More of Them.

A few weeks ago I sat down at my desk with a cup of coffee in hand and opened up my inbox to find a note from the people behind LoveTheGive.com that stopped me in my tracks.

The email was sharing information about the The GIVE Bag and seeing if Ryan and I might want to get involved. And honestly, it was a total no-brainer for me.  I turned around in my desk chair (Ryan and I sit back to back in our tiny 10×10 ft. home office) and said… “we just got a project you will L-O-V-E!”.

The GIVE Bag was started by the Steve and Alexandra Cohen Foundation after being inspired by The Giving Plate and the Pay it Forward movements. They wanted to create something that could start in motion a mentality of random acts of kindness and gifting small things with a big heart. Both Ryan and I instantly clasped onto the idea and knew exactly who we wanted to love on with our GIVE bags – our Chemo crew.

There are a few things I love about The GIVE Bag, but the fact that the possibilities are endless is probably my favorite! In all actuality the bags themselves are just little totes. There’s nothing fancy about them (besides the QR codes, and I’ll get to those in a second!) so really, it’s totally up to you what you do with it. You can fill it with a homemade meal for a new momma, fill it with a bottle of wine and chocolate for your bff who had a hard week at work, fill it with board games and coloring books for your neighbors kids who are going on a road trip, or like us… pack it full of donuts.

For us, donuts were the first thing we thought of when we saw The GIVE Bag. While Ryan was going through Chemo there was a sweet couple named Patricia and Buzz, who greatly impacted our lives. Patricia was battling breast cancer and receiving treatment alongside Ryan.  Yet when she and Buzz walked into the chemo room we knew it was going to be a good day.

Patricia’s fiery energy and lust for life was absolutely contagious! She always showed up decked out in her breast cancer pink and ready for another day of battle, and her husband was right behind her with a giant comforting smile. But not only did they bring the energy, encouragement, and kindness each treatment, they also brought the donuts. SO MANY DONUTS!

When Buzz walked into the chemo room everyone would start clapping, because we knew The Donut Man had arrived! Buzz would walk around handing out donuts to all of the patients, nurses, and caregivers… knowing by heart who liked what kind of donut. His kindness overwhelmed us every time and we would leave talking about how fun it was to see Buzz and Patricia, and not the cancer. The donuts were a small gesture, but they filled all of our hearts and gave us hope.

Yesterday, we stopped by our old chemo stomping grounds and dropped off GIVE Bags full of donuts. We did it because Buzz showed us how to love strangers well, and there is nothing better than paying it forward.

HERE’S ALL YOU NEED TO DO:

And before I wrap up this post, I can’t not mention the QR codes! Each bag has a QR code that you can scan to share your location.

YOUR BAG KEEPS GIVING (And you can see your scan on the #LoveTheGive world heatmap!):

The person who receives the bag is encouraged to then fill it back up and give it again! And you can see your location here. It’s the most amazing thing… and I can’t get enough.

So, whether you are like us and have had someone encourage you with random acts of kindness or you have someone in mind that you could bless with a tote full of goodies I cannot encourage you enough to scoop up a GIVE Bag or two (they’re free!) to send out into the world.

In partnership with #LoveTheGive
