One for you, One for your neighbor!
One of my favorite things about this season has been our neighborhood. EVERYONE is out on their porches, taking conference calls, sipping their coffee, and come five o’clock the porches come alive with social distancing cocktail hours… seriously, it’s been the cutest, and it has been such a beautiful thing to watch. I hope this new routine is here to stay!
Since we are all out and not about, I’ve been working on fun fancy new cocktails and appetizers for us to enjoy from our porches, and my latest creation is a Vidalia Onion French Dip recipe and y’all it is GOOD.
If you are new to the South and haven’t ever heard of a Vidalia Onion, then start taking notes, because this one is worth writing down! Years ago, during The Great Depression, Southern farmers were looking for a new crop that might start to turn the dial and that’s when they discovered Vidalia Onions, a low-sulfur sweet onion that tastes like candy. Vidalia Onions are truly one of the South’s most prized possessions, and right now they’re in season and READY TO SHIP!!
Every year I look forward to Vidalia Onions season and this year I ordered a box straight to my house. Speaking of which, I should probably ship a box to my mom for mother’s day! We’ve been putting them in everything, but I wanted to make something special for our neighbors… so I came up with a little “Porch Party Kit” to drop off on their front steps to enjoy during social distancing happy hour, and they turned out SO CUTE! 🙂
Vidalia Onion French Dip Recipe
I followed this recipe for GF/DF and it turned out fantastic! I divided it out into little containers with handmade labels, and packed it all in a disposable roasting tin with a bag of potato chips! The perfect little happy hour treat… plus, it’s just pain CUTE.
So whether you are ordering a Mother’s Day gift for your Southern momma or looking to spice up your at home happy hours, think Vidalia Onions! They are truly one of the BEST things about Southern living!
Oh, also, don’t forget about breakfast. This Vidalia Onion Frittata is one of my absolute FAVORITES!
