My Secret to Sundresses: A Slip
A Must Have Accessory
I was talking to some friends yesterday, and we got on the topic of dresses, as we typically do, and someone mentioned that they were having a really hard time finding dresses that were not see-through and I was like, “Wait. Are you not wearing a slip?!” And immediately, all the heads turned to me at once, like slip was a word they hadn’t heard before, and I started to laugh. I said “I guess I’m old school, I wear a slip under almost every dress!” And the group did a collective “REALLY?!”, which I thought was hysterical. I seriously thought everyone was wearing slips… but I guess not! So I thought I’d put a PSA out there for you if you too are having this issue: GET YOURSELF A SLIP. I kind of think it’s the best thing ever.
I have a handful of these $14 half slips from Target and I swear by them.
And I personally don’t like to see through the skirt of my dresses, and this typically does the trick for me. I’ve been wearing this slip style since I was like… maybe 14??!! I don’t know, again, I truly thought everyone was wearing slips under their dresses, ha! To be honest, I really like wearing them! It helps with static cling and the fabric of your skirt or dress will lay really nicely. And if you are wanting to try fun and trendy styles from less expensive places like H&M (like this!), Zara (like this!), Target (like this!), Walmart (like this!), or Mango (like this!) that may not have the lining you want… just add a slip and you are ready to go!
I really hope this post is helpful for you! And again, this is TOTALLY a personal preference so don’t feel like you have to do anything here. This is just what I do. But, if you are looking for a solution to the see-through problem, this is it! 😉
Oh this is too funny! I remember having to wear slips as a kid under itchy party dresses but they completely fell off my radar. Thanks for the reminder!!!

hahah! YES!! Me too!
I can’t believe you did a post on this today, because one of my main goals for this week was to find a slip I can wear under some dresses that are a little see through. I have a pair of spanks, but sometimes it feels too tight and makes my stomach hurt. I was thinking a slip would be perfect and it’s been a long time since I’ve worn one. Thank you again!

hahah!!! I love that, I’m so glad this was helpful! xx
I still have longer half slips as well as a pair of lace trimmed pettipants. You should check these out. Amazon carries them now. Can be worn with skirts, dresses or longer shorts. Nice under layer.
Oh my goodness thank you for suggesting these! I was literally about to comment that my complaint about slips is that sometimes I want more of a shorts feel! I’m too old to be trying to squeeze into my old dance spandex from 15 years ago but you have just solved all of my problems with pettipants!!

Love that!
GIRL! Me too. I thought everyone knew about slips. I think I’ve been wearing the same one for years!! I feel naked without one. LOL

Em, it totally does!!!
I always wear a slip under a dress or skirt. It makes the dress drape and not cling to any bumps. I mentioned it to a friend who is 7 years younger than me and she laughed. I guess I am old school too.

Team slip ALL. THE. WAY.
I feel like slips are something our moms and grandmas wore. Even when my mom suggests I could wear one, I feel old. But they are very helpful! And I often forget about them. They are suuuuper comfortable!!

Hahah! Totally!! I think that’s the issue, everyone relates them to their grandmas… but I’m like, our grandmas were/are genius!
Great post. For awhile it was very hard to find a slip in stores at the mall. Still sometimes hard to find the full length kind (with the bodice). But, you’re right, it does prevent “see-thru” and can make such a difference in how the fabric hangs.

Jane, it really does make a difference!!
It’s so funny! I thought I was the only one still wearing a slip under my dresses! I love how the feel and I love the extra protection they give me when all of a sudden a gust of wind might blow my dress up as I’m loading a baby into the car. Or just having my hands full of whatever I’m doing that day. Thanks for posting this!
