It Was Time To Brighten It Up!

Ryan and I have been talking about re-doing or, more accurately, “doing” our master bedroom for years. Last weekend we decided it was time to officially start the process.
We both love home projects, but we’ve been putting off our bedroom for lack of inspiration. Our room isn’t large, it felt so dark and well, just bleh. So we decided that we should start with step one, the paint, and see where it took us… and I’ve got to be honest, I’m now kicking myself for not doing it sooner.
About 6 years ago I painted the room this blue slate color. At the time it was lovely and worked well enough. But after making some changes to our overhead and wall lighting, we realized how dark our room actually was.
Seriously, it was a “light slate blue”, but for some reason it felt like a cave even on the sunniest days. Something had to change!
*Also please note the curtain rods with no curtains… it’s been like that for almost a year now… #winning.
Choosing the right WHite Paint
Once we decided to it was time to rip the band-aid off and paint, we took a trip to Home Depot to do a little color-swatching!
When it came to picking the actual paint colors the process was fairly easy. We’d done our “white paint research” and had an entire list of names from the BEHR® collection of paints to try. We took our notes to Home Depot and chose BEHR PREMIUM PLUS ULTRA® Interior Paint and Primer Eggshell as our foundation, and requested 5 samples to try. When it comes to painting, I tend to stick with what has worked well in the past. We’ve been long time users of Behr and I love their “paint and primer in one”, which saves both time and money.

And the Winner Goes to…#2!
After checking out with all our paint supplies we headed home to pick a color. We sampled five whites and ended up going with the second swatch we tested, “Snowy Pine” (PPU10-13).
Painting in white can be tricky and my main advice would be that if you love the “white paint look” you see all over Pinterest, it’s worth knowing that most of the time those colors aren’t exactly “pure white.” We loved Snowy Pine because although crisp and clean looking, it gives a nice off-white, parchment look. So don’t shy away from off-white when you’re looking at swatches. Even darker looking swatches, once they’re on the wall, are incredibly bright.
Only Two Coats
The paint went flawlessly over the old blue, which was a total relief since we’ve done 4+ coats of paint in a few rooms in our home before. We were thrilled that we only needed two coats with the BEHR PREMIUM PLUS ULTRA Paint!
A gallon and a half later the room was completely and utterly transformed.
Truth be told, I think we are going to repaint a few other walls in our house with this color, we LOVE it that much!
Keeping these White Walls Looking Fresh
Along with our samples, brushes, and drop cloths we also picked up a container of BEHR SWIPES™ Interior Wall Swipes! I had heard really great things about them, plus with a new puppy that LOVES to bounce her rubber ball onto the walls I knew it would come in handy once the room was white! More on this in a moment, but first…
Framing The Windows
Ryan was so jazzed by the transformation that he took it one step further and framed in our windows, which elevated the room instantly.
He’s gotten pretty handy at woodworking and this project took him a total of 4 hours, max. I’m a little biased, but it was pretty impressive. 😉
If you’re dying to know more about that project, let us know in the comments!
Admiring Our Bright New Space
When the walls were finished and the framework was dry, we sat on the floor and just looked at each other. Then in unison said, “why didn’t we do this sooner?” We felt both proud and dumb. It was such an easy fix!
Now that the room is painted and the framework is complete, we are beginning to style it out! We found these curtains and this rod that we are trying out for size. We’re also starting to source a new rug, dresser, vanity, etc… So really, the fun has just begun!
And if you are wondering, yes, even little Miss Dolly loves the new paint color. She already taken to bouncing her rubber ball against the wall (whhhyy?!?) so those BEHR SWIPES™ Interior Wall Swipes have come in handy more than I’d like to admit! These wipes are specially formulated with a paint safe formula that actively maintains your painted surfaces without removing the paint that protects them, so I love using them to quickly and easily wipe away dirt and common household stains.
If you are looking for a great white paint and a way to keep it clean I’d HIGHLY recommend BEHR PREMIUM PLUS ULTRA Interior Paint in “Snowy Pine” and the BEHR SWIPES™ to keep your new space looking nice… you will not regret it!
P.S. Stay tuned to more on our Master Bedroom Makeover, we have a long way to go!
