Everything You Need to Know About Dermaplaning

(It’s Easier Than You Think!)

Last week I posted a photo on instagram and on the priviate Ashley Brooke Facebook Group (if you aren’t a member, you need to join!!;)) asking if y’all dermaplaned your skin. Over 60% of you said Y-E-S and that it was life changing. The other 40% said no, and over 100 of you DMed me for a tutorial. So I got to thinking….

I was HIGHLY influenced by my friend Cristin Cooper who swears by dermaplaning and I thought back in March, “since I’m quarantined, why the heck not give it a whirl?!” I’m not going anywhere… I might as well try out those beauty things I’ve been too scared to try. So I ordered these razors and texted Cristin to say, “this is all your fault.” And she said, “welcome to the best skin of your life.”

She was not wrong.

Before I get into this any further I want to caveat this by saying I’m not a dermatologist (clearly) and or an expert… I’m a beauty and skin enthusiast, aka, I like good skin. I’ve struggled with sensitive and temperamental skin my entire life. In high school I was on Accutane, and even though as an adult it has gotten so much better, I am still extremely careful. I’ve cut out gluten and dairy completely and most all sugar (I use coconut sugar or maple syrup if absolutely necessary)… and my skin likes me a whole lot better these days. Anyway, all of that to say, if you have acne prone skin, I’d talk to someone before trying this at home. Take it from someone who has suffered from problematic skin for the better part of her life, do YOUR research!! I’d never want you to try something and end up with a devastating breakout… because seriously, I’ve BEEN THERE.

Okay, now, let’s get into it!

What is Dermaplaning?

“Dermaplaning is a skin treatment that uses an exfoliating blade to skim dead skin cells and hair from your face. It’s also called microplaning or blading. Dermaplaning aims to make your skin’s surface smooth, youthful, and radiant. … It’s also used to remove “peach fuzz,” the short, soft hairs on your face.”Healthline.com

So technically, it’s shaving your face, your ENTIRE face (forehead, nose, etc…) with a modified straight edge razor if you want to boil it down. There’s really no other way to say it. Ha! As much as I’d like to pretend like it’s something else, it’s most definitely shaving your face.

BUT more than that, you are removing the dead skin cells from your face. It’s the most incredible exfoliation you’ll EVER do. There is an INSTANT difference. Seriously, it’s wild. With that being said, let’s get into my experience and questions I received…

Dermaplaning Q + A

What razors did you use?

These were the razors I ordered. Each one lasts for 3 uses (ish). They are affordable and cute! čśë

Does dermaplaning really make a difference?!

OH MY GOSH YES. I used to think it was a bunch of hype, but after the very first time I was absolutely BLOWN away. My skin was instantly brighter, smoother, and more even. I was in shock. My skincare actually sinks into my skin, my makeup looks 1000% better. I mean, over all I can’t find any negative.

Does dermaplaning make the peach fuzz on your face grow back thicker?

No. Not at all. This was the thing that I was the MOST freaked out about, but guys, you have nothing to worry about.

Did dermaplaning break out your skin?

No. But I wouldn’t do it if I had active breakouts… that just seems like a recipe for disaster in my opinion.

Were you scared you’d cut/nick your face?

Um, yes, terrified. AND I DID!!! The first time I did it I was a little too nervous and nicked the side of my jaw, and I freaked out. It wasn’t bad, but still. I realized I was pressing down too hard.

Did you get razor burn?

The first time, yes. But again, it’s becuase I pressed WAY too hard. You couldn’t see the razor burn, but I felt it for days and it did bother me. I thought, I’m NEVER going to do this again. But a week later I tried it again and it has been a dream ever since.

How often do you dermaplane your skin?

I think that’s a personal preference. I’ve been doing it once a week and it’s been great! So it’s totally up to you.

How long does it take?!

Well, the first time, FOREVER. But that’s mostly becuase I was freaked out. But now, 3 minutes maybe. It’s so easy.

How do you dermaplane your skin?

Okay, so for this I followed Jordan Harper, FNP-C, CANS, tutorial. I was going to make a tutorial for you, but I thought it would be better coming from an actual professional. Jordan is a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner and specializes in skin. I felt comfortable with learning this from a professional! I embeded her video below. I have so many friends who go to her, and felt confident in her knowledge. I did exactly what she said to do in her video (below) and these two posts here & here.

What products do you use when you dermaplane your face?

I will wash my face with this cleanser, use this toner, then dermaplane with these razors. After I dermaplane I will tone my skin again, add my face oil, eye cream, and night cream. I also do this about 30 minutes before bed so my fresh skin isn’t squished up against a pillow!

Okay, I think that’s it! Did I answer all of your questions?! Let me know if you have any that I didn’t cover and I’ll be happy to speak from experience or point you in the direction of someone who might be able to help!

The schick version of these razors work much better for me! They seem sharper and I have found that I nicked myself accidentally with the tinkle razors, but never with the schick ones.

Would love to hear more about your experience of your dietary changes that positively affected your skin. Would it be possible to create a post describing the journey you took to cut out sugar, dairy and gluten?

Hi Erika, thank you for asking and of course… I will work on it! I really do feel like my skin is so much better when I eat really clean!

That is a personal preference, but normally anywhere from 1-3 occasions. As time pass the blade will get dull and therefore less powerful.
