Getting Out of a Funk
I don’t know about you, but this week I had some serious moments of grumpiness, anxiety, and over all “WHAT IS HAPPENING?!?!?!” feelings. And then other moments of pure bliss in my happy little bubble. Which honestly… I think that’s normal and par for the course when you are going through anything weird or difficult.
Ryan and I joke that I really like my feelings. I’m NEVER one to sweep anything under the rug. I like to feel exactly what I’m feeling in the moment and either totally embrace it or deal with it. End of story. But mid-week this week I just couldn’t shake the funk I had let myself slip into. I wasn’t complaining or anything, I just felt apathetic… Which is clearly not normal my vibe, ha!
Anyway, it went on for 2 days straight. Yes, there is totally grace for that (and much more), but I was just over myself to be completely honest.
… And then I got a DM from a reader and I remembered.
She sent me a message saying that she was having a really hard time. She said she knew we’d been through hard times before too and asked for advice. It was so sweet, genuine and far too kind. I am not a counselor, therapist, or psychiatrist… just a gal who’s sat on the couch across from a counselor for countless hours once upon a time (and as often as I can!). So I sent her a few blog posts I had written about documenting the good, journaling, and more, plus a word of encouragement and a virtual hug. But really, she did way more for me. She reminded me that it was time to get out of my own funk.
I love when I get that nudge from the Holy Sprit that says, “I’ve got you. You can shake it off now, it’s time.”
So I reread my old blog posts, then pulled out a few of my old tricks (listed below) and got back on track. Life isn’t perfect. I personally wasn’t built just for the happy side of feelings (no one is!), I like the WHOLE spectrum… so it’s okay to feel them. I believe God gave them to me for a reason. But it’s also okay to say, let’s slide back into happy, okay?! I can’t choose what happens around me or make decisions for others, but I can decided how I feel, and that right there, is whole lot of power.
So cheers to Friday, and deciding to take the power back.
My Favorite Tricks
- MOVE – I hate moving when I’m grumpy. I like to melt into the sofa, but you know… just a walk around the block in your pjs (which I have done) can really lift your spirits!
- GET OUTSIDE – I know this may be tough depending on your current situation, but if you can and are able, breathing fresh air without your phone is like a spa day.
- JOURNAL – Write alllllllllll the things down. It doesn’t have to make sense, it doesn’t have to be grammatically correct. Just write them down as the words come, set a timer for 10 minutes. You will feel a BILLION times better.
- TALK – Tell someone that you are feeling weird. Ask them to listen, not to help. Just get it off your chest and share to a trusted friend or partner.
- BE GENEROUS – Do something for someone else. It can be as simple as making a meal and dropping it off for a neighbor to sending someone a gift card, to calling a loved one who may be lonely.
- SHOWER – I feel like this goes without saying, but honestly there is very little a good hot shower can’t fix! 😉
Side Note: These are not really “tricks”, just things you and I already know, but sometimes I can’t remember common sense things when I’m weary, you know?! So this list is really more for me than you. I need a place of reference for when I need it again! 😉 Also, I want to put it in here just in case it isn’t CRYSTAL CLEAR. Your feelings matter. You matter, we all matter.
