Update on the Book Club

I can’t believe we did it! Made it through month 1 of our brand new book club, and guys, I’m so excited. Your feedback has been amazing and I’ve been loving seeing you all over on instagram stories reading your books and using the hashtag #AshleyBrookeBookClub. Y’all are the best.

Seriously though, I can not tell you HOW excited I am about this book club. We have MAJOR things in the works over here and I can’t wait to spill all the details. Just know that Ryan is building out a fancy new website for the book club, and we’ve hired Betsy back on. For those of you who are longtime ABD followers, you know… B’s the best (YAY!!!) person to help us run this because we have so many ideas. In all honesty I’m so glad you all love girly chicklit books just as much as I do, and I can’t wait to start rolling out the fun over the next few months!

But, before I get off on a tangent, let’s discuss February’s book, shall we?!

Let's Discuss!

I Owe You One by Sophie Kinsella

Put your answers down and any other comments in the comment section below! We can all start chatting there… but don’t be shy, we are all friends here!

Questions

1. Which character was your favorite or most relatable?
2. What did you like best/least about this book?
3. If you got the chance to ask the author of this book one question, what would it be?

My Answers:

1. What did you like best/least about this book?

Oh, so easy! I love the author’s quick wit and the way she details her experiences.  I end up always seeing myself as the main character, the witty detail and personality she gives everyone in her stories are just so charming!

I did think the beginning of the book was a bit slow, but I truly feel like that about most books. I’m never hooked until page 100!

2. Which character was your favorite or most relatable?

Oh, I could totally see myself as Fixie. I love how she just wants to be liked so badly, but also wants to be in charge! Although while she was with Ryan I wanted to scream at her, “you deserve beetter!”

Also, her sister’s character, Nicole, cracked me up. I feel like we all know someone juuuuust like her! 😉

3. If you got the chance to ask the author of this book one question, what would it be?

“will you be my friend?!!” No but really, I think we could be friends!

Okay, it’s your turn! Answer 1 or all 3 questions below and let’s discuss!

Also, I’ll be formally announcing our March book club this week, but if you want a sneak peek, here it is

    1. I love Sophie Kinsella all her books are witty and very up to date with whats really happening IRL. I agree the start was a bit slow.. its a given since its introduction.

My Favorite was hannah and fixie, i cal relate to both of them. they seem to have this diff types of obsessive compulsive behavior that i see myself. My least fave was Ryan how can he be such an A-hole (sorry) I agree with you Ashley I was also screaming in my head you deserve better hehehe..

I would ask Sophie her process on how she develops her stories. if its based on her experience or someone else’s. of course ill ask her to name character after me hehehe (wishful thinking)

Ashley thank you for this great platform.

      Toni!

I totally agree, her writing is very “up to date” on what’s going on which I love. I;m with you on that! Also, yes… I have to always get over my 100 page slump.

AND I ditto to everything you said about Ryan. I do feel like his character could have been flushed out a little better. He was a little too predictable and flat, personally, but none the less. I did not like him.

Also, I love “name a character after me”. You are too funny!

While I found the ending very predictable I thought it was such a fun read! And I especially liked that the author shared her inspiration for the story. I can totally see a business man asking someone to watch his laptop as he steps outside but would never have the imeagination to come up with the this whole story!

      Megan!

TOTALLY. I knew exactly who she was going to end up with the moment she met him, but it was really fun and lighthearted. A great beach read!

Also, I love that you said this… because I thought the same thing, WOW what an imagination!

      Thanks for reading along Megan!

    3. When is your next book coming out? I love all of her books and I am always just waiting for the next book to be published.

This has been my favorite of her books. A little predictable? Maybe, but also fun. I too related to Fixie……..it’s a curse!
This is fun! Looking forward to the next book.

    1. I liked Seb a lot, I related the most to foxie but I hated how much of a pushover she was and how much she let her brother get away with it was a little unbearable how much she let people walk all over her but she totally redeemed herself in the end commanding respect and turning the shop around!

    2. I always love Sophie Kinsella’s books, they are witty and charming and have super relatable characters, this one was very predictable like a little too much so, I also both love and hate the name “Fixie” and I still can’t decide if it’s adorable or loathe some. I totally agree about Nicole… everyone knows a Nicole and probably a Hannah too!

    3. I would love to know about how she comes up with her ideas, does she outline or does it just spill out of her and flow?

      Jordan,

Your comment about the name Fixie made me laugh out loud. I had the same thought. Honestly, I didn’t like it. But maybe because it was just too obvious?! I don’t know. But I’m so glad you said something! Ha!

      Thanks for reading along, friend!

I liked this book! I thought Fixie was most relatable but like most chick-lit heroines, there were points in the book where I wanted to shake some sense into her – Ryan, her brother, and don’t get me started on the uncle! But she got it together in the end and I enjoyed that. But maybe it ended just a little too quick? I think I just wanted a little more, which is a tell-tale that I liked it. Looking forward to next month!

YES! Beth I totally agree… there could have been so much more, and felt like there was going to be and then there wasn’t! Ugh. But it still was such a fun easy read!

      Thanks for reading along, friend!

I loved Fixie and Hannah, both planners, like to be in control/have everything just right. I definitely identify with Hannah, trying to be prepared and researched with tasks and lists for what I want in life, and kind of unraveled when things go differently. I liked how even though Fixie had trials of her own, she always was ready to battle them mentally/emotionally. She goes the extra mile and I really admired her character for that.

I really loved that Fixie ended up with Seb. They really did seem meant to be from the start! I also enjoyed the concept of fulfilling someone’s IOU, no questions asked, even when it went far beyond the norm. I really had a hard time with Jake’s character, and wish he wouldn’t have been so influenced by status or Ryan’s faux know-it-all crap, and his pushy personality conflicted with my own (much like Fixie’s) that I could completely understand how his voice choked Fixie out like weeds. I was so glad when the store FINALLY turned out to be okay. Also, in agreement with everyone else, when Fixie was with Ryan I cringed throughout most of their dialogue and his treatment of her/their relationship. She sooooo deserved much much much better than him.

Sophie, please oh please what’s going on with Becky Brandon (née Bloomwood) now??? Shopaholic and A Pre-Teen?

      Amelia!

I’m so with you, the concept of fulfilling someones IOU is just so clever!

Also, I love your question at the end… so funny… where is she now?!

      Thanks for reading along!

I loved the book like every other Sophie Kinsella book, nothing heavy, just light and fun. I totally related to Fixie how she had so much self doubt but in reality had everything under control. I was expecting a plot twist with Seb, but enjoyed the way it played out…I didn’t see that coming. Such a fun story. I’d love to read the sequel where Fixie doesn’t second guess and the entire family is behind her. Does she re-open her catering business?

Cathy! Yes, totally agree… just a fun, witty, lighthearted, read!

I agree, I’d had loved for there to have been more with Seb! So much potential there!

      Thanks for reading along!

I loved this book but I too thought it started slow. Once it started moving quickly I couldn’t put it down.

I loved Fixie, probably because I too have chosen poorly more than once and I could see me in so much of her. I also loved Seb and how decent and kind he was to her no matter what. And Hannah, I loved their relationship and how Fixie handled the stuff she had to tell Hannah when it was tough. I thought they were the sweetest. And as mom I loved that the kids pulled together and got their crap together when they needed to, I know mine do the same. I screamed at Ryan so much like he was someone I knew. What a pain in the you know he was.

This is my first book club and I wish you could have seen me scream when I finished it on 2/28 and felt like a huge winner! I was so very proud of myself. I also ordered the new one asap and had to read something else in the mean time because I was hooked on reading and the stress reliever it instantly became!!

    Love you girl.

    1. Fixie was absolutely precious! I loved how relatable she was.
    2. My favorite thing about the book is how witty and fun the author’s writing is. I could not put this book down!
However, I did get a bit peeved at Fixie for thinking such positive things about Ryan and how she dwelled on him when she was so much better than him. He was awful!
    3. I would ask her if she would write a sequel! 😉

  12. March 11, 2019 / 1:03 pm

This was a fun read! I decided to go with the audio version because you mentioned how cute the British accent is. I found myself slipping into an accent myself after hours of listening lol. Great for my daily commute.

Fixie reminded me soo much of my sister, who is a self-labeled people-pleaser. But I could find myself relating to her at times, too… but more often than not, I just wanted to shake her and give advice. So perhaps I am more of a Hannah.

Overall, I saw many bits and pieces of my family in Fixie’s family. I grew up with the family business, I’m the last of 7 kids and we are all so very different like Fixie is from her siblings.

My least favorite part of the book was that during the tumult Fixie wasn’t simply honest. “Why do you want to meet?” Just be honest, I want to make up. Then when Seb asked if she wanted money, why didn’t she just say her thoughts out loud instead of playing into it. Do people really act this way? I can’t imagine not yelling it all out and getting to the bottom of the truth.

But I still loved the book anyway. The other employees at Farr’s were my favorite part, and Seb is just wonderful 🙂

I cannot agree more about your opinion about Fixie handling things so poorly with Seb. She was always such a people-pleaser, it seemed like she would just say she wanted to make up!

        Agreed ladies!!

  13. March 14, 2019 / 9:30 am

    1. I think like most people I’ve seen here, I relate to Fixie! Though I don’t think my urge is nearly as strong as her’s, I definitely want to fix all that I can.

    2. I love how lighthearted, fun, and easy to read this book was! It was so sweet and I loved all the characters (minus Ryan). I loved the growth we were able to see, not only in Fixie but in everyone. I thought it was fun to see how everyone developed. My least favorite part was how naive Fixie was about Ryan and how she handled things with Seb. Maybe it was because I was watching from the outside but when she kept stroking Ryan’s ego I wanted to scream.

    3. If you had the opportunity to change something about the book, would you and what would it be?

    Question 2:
Greg. Fave character by far. Every time he entered in a scene I would start laughing out loud… such a well placed detail in the story, in my opinion.

    Question 3:
Shopaholic… was that written from experience? Yes or no..

Kyla, First of all, I love that you are here. Also, Greg. HI-LARIOUS.
      Love you! xx

      P.S. I believe the answer to number 3 is a giant Y-E-S.
