Defining My Style

Ines Dress REFORMATION | www.ashleybrookedesign.scom

Over the holiday break I did some serious thinking about my “style”.  Now, I realize that sounds so petty, but I don’t really think it is. Especially when you are trying to clean out your closet over break and realize it looks like multiple personalities in there.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for switching it up every now and again, but I also love the idea of being able to say, “nah, that’s not me!”

For a long time, or ever since I can remember, I’ve just made things work, which is not necessarily a bad thing! I like feminine pieces so whatever fell into that category (which is a whole lot) I just made “work”. But after doing a little soul searching in my closet along with a very intense clean-out I realized I do have a style I prefer

Old Hollywood Meets Girl Next Door

I had this epiphany last week with my mom sister. We were sitting around the dinner table chatting about the looks we like on each-other (as mothers and daughters do) –like how my sister looks amazing in high-waisted skinny jeans and a cropped tops, or how my mom looks great in dresses above the knee with strappy heels.  So I  asked them what they thought my style – my best, the most me, look is – and my sister said “old Hollywood meets girl next door”

Hmm…I had to pause for a moment.  That was the first time I had heard what I’d been thinking for so long. Finally, I had words that described “my style.”

She said I seem to be the most confident me when I wear things that reflect that, and she’s right. I’ve always felt drawn to classic, feminine style with a touch of retro (channel the old Hollywood!).  I’m not overly “preppy” or “L.A. street style trendy”, but I have a style unto my own.  I know it sounds silly, but after she said that it gave me a whole new sense of self.

Now that I have some words around it I’m able to put pieces together with more purpose and focus… A.K.A., not get distracted my the latest and greatest!  Stick to who I am, which brought me to this dress.

Reformation Dress (Long Sleeve Version & High Slit Version) // White House Black Market Shoes (Old, Similar Here & Here) // Cuyana Bag c/o // Tuckernuck Bow Earrings // Rodin Lipstick in “Winks”

This Classic Midi Dress

Honestly, I don’t think I have a single dress in my closet (maybe besides my wedding dress) that I love as much as I love this dress. It’s flattering in all the right places, has some serious twirl to it and the cap sleeves give a nod to the old Hollywood glam I love. The fabric is easy to wear, has stretch to it, and is oh-so-soft! I ordered it in a small and it fits like a glove, plus it’s under $120! Such a great statement dress at a great price.

There are a few sizes left here, but this exact dress is also available in a long sleeve version here, and I’m totally drooling over the red. I think that may be the Valentine dress of my dreams! Also, I spotted the same silhouette with the high slit and I and will 100% be ordering this one for a trip next month. I’m all about finding something that works and going for it!

All of that to say, if you are having a crisis of the closet like I was, I’m here for you.  It’s frustrating, but do yourself a favor, ask your favorite people and they will help you nail down what feels “twirl worthy” for you.

Ashley, this post is bringing me a huge smile because when I read that your sister described your style as “old Hollywood meets girl next door,” this is the same exact description that my sisters described for my style years ago. I have always looked at your clothing choices, make up, etc., and saw you as an old Hollywood type gal. Thank you for this post today, it was quite delightful.

Love this post! I think finding your personal style is something that’s both lasting and evolving over time! I’ve always loved solid colors and stripes, but I’ve begun to get into more patterns that have that classic, fitted tailor.

Abigail, it’s so hard… I think you have to play around with it for a while before something officially “sticks”! But I love the tailored look as well. Effortless and cool.

I totally agree with your sister! You seem like an approachable Grace Kelly! Many blogs/instagrams I follow seem to have one part of the equation of your style, but not the other and you have such a great mix of both! I love following your accounts for inspiration!

I believe that your sister is correct. Check out the eShakti website for dresses that are made strictly for you. You can choose style, fabric, sleeve type, etc. Might be of interest?? A friend told me about this site and orders sundresses for summer and special occasion gowns for galas held in Sarasota.

      Lots of love, Ashley Brooke
