Have no fear, if you haven’t finished the book or scooped up a copy yet, we made sure there are no spoilers in this one. So feel free to read without anxiety, but seriously, you’ve got to pick this one up ASAP! 😉
I love hearing from our authors and Lindsey is no exception! I loved getting a little insight into her writing process and a behind the scenes glimpse at this book that I adored!
So without further ado…
LIGHTNING ROUND Q&A:
WHAT ARE YOU READING RIGHT NOW?
LINDSEY: Dear Emmie Blue by Lia Louis – preorder it now, it’s great!
WHAT WAS YOUR LAST AMAZON PURCHASE?
LINDSEY: Cat litter, a tie-dye kit and 1lb of sour gummy bears… I have a problem
WHAT’S YOUR STARBUCKS ORDER?
LINDSEY: Either a straight, black coffee or venti non-fat mocha, depending on my mood.
WHAT IS YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE?
LINDSEY: Pro-wrestling! I co-host a wrestling podcast called Tights & Fights so far, I’ve been to six Wrestlemanias. Can’t wait until it’s in LA next year.
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE CELEBRITY OR FICTIONAL CHARACTER?
LINDSEY: That’s a tough one! I really admire Chrissy Teigen’s hustle and attitude to life in general, plus her recipes really are great.
WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT ONLINE OBSESSION (WEBSITE, INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT, ETC.)
LINDSEY: I’m an Instagram junkie, I have to leave my phone in another room when I’m trying to write. I’m so easily distracted.
WHAT IS NEXT IN YOUR NETFLIX QUEUE?
LINDSEY: So much… My husband and I are midway through a Frasier rewatch so that’s always there, and then I’ve got the movie, The Half of It which I’m excited to see as well as Michelle Obama’s Becoming documentary. Plus a whole bunch of other good stuff.
Okay, Let’s Chat “One in a Million”
DID YOU SET OUT TO WRITE A RETELLING OF “MY FAIR LADY” OR DID YOU REALIZE THAT’S WHAT THE STORY WAS ONCE YOU GOT GOING?
It was definitely a conscious decision. In the musical, Henry Higgins is trying to turn Eliza into as a member of high society and I couldn’t stop wondering what that might look like today – instead of two upper class men using a poor woman as a pawn in a bet to pass her off as a ‘lady’, we’ve got a female entrepreneur working with a guy who is completely disinterested in social media, to turn him into an influencer. Obviously it’s a romantic comedy first and foremost but there’s a little social commentary mixed in there.
WE LOVE THE CAMARADERIE OF THE LADES AT CONTENT. DO YOU HAVE A FRIEND YOU COULD GO IN TO BUSINESS WITH?
I’m so glad! I kind of want to start a business with Annie and Miranda, they really are the complete package. That said, I think going into business with a friend is pretty risky, you’ve really got to have crystal clear communication and a very, very good business plan. My friend Kevin Dickson and I have talked about organizing writer retreats, we’re both authors and we love mentoring other writers, but we also love chatting and cocktails and I’m not sure we’d get that much work done…
DID YOU HAVE A FAVORITE “MAKEOVER MOMENT” FOR EITHER ANNIE OR DR. PAGE?
It’s so hard to choose one particular scene because who doesn’t love a makeover moment? One of my favorite bits of the book was added relatively late in the edit, when Annie and Dr Samuel visit Margate and she’s teaching him how to take a selfie. Obviously, we only see things from Annie’s perspectives and she’s definitely falling for him here, even though she’s trying to convince herself otherwise. It really felt like a magical moment where they shifted from allies on a project two people opening up to each other. I’m also a total sucker for Sam’s moves at the dance class. Still waters run deep, everybody!
