OUR BOOK OF THE MONTH AUTHOR!
Typically these interviews are spoiler free but we had a question we needed answered, so if you want to remain spoiler free read through the interview and skip the very last question. Then come back and get some fun behind the scenes insight when you’re all done! 😉
We are so excited to continue talking about Love & Gelato because we loved the adventurous spirit of Lina and how vivid Florence was within its pages. We hope you’re enjoying it as much as we are!
So without further ado…
LIGHTNING ROUND Q&A:
WHAT ARE YOU READING RIGHT NOW?
JENNA: I just started a book last night called “Jane & Prudence ” at the recommendation of a friend. I’m enjoying it so far!
WHAT WAS YOUR LAST AMAZON PURCHASE?
JENNA: A kid sized rolling pin for play dough and “Time of our Lives” by Austin Siegemund-Broka and Emily Wibberley. I can’t get over the fact that they are a real life couple that has managed to figure out how to a) write great books together and b) not kill each other in the process.
WHAT’S YOUR STARBUCKS ORDER?
JENNA: Drip coffee with a splash of cream–as long as the quality is good I’m seriously low maintenance about coffee.
WHAT IS YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE?
JENNA: Buying plants!
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE CELEBRITY OR FICTIONAL CHARACTER?
JENNA: Lizzo–I’m genuinely baffled as to how I made it through the first 32 years of my life without her.
WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT ONLINE OBSESSION (WEBSITE, INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT, ETC.)
WHAT IS NEXT IN YOUR NETFLIX QUEUE?
JENNA: A terrible dating show that I will not name because UGH SO EMBARRASSING.
Okay, Let’s Chat “Love & Gelato”
ITALY IS ALMOST LIKE ANOTHER CHARACTER IN THIS BOOK. HAVE YOU SPENT MUCH TIME THERE? WHAT WAS IT LIKE RESEARCHING ALL OF THE LANDMARKS AND DETAILS OF FLORENCE?
I went to high school in Florence Italy (yes, it was amazing!) and I had a friend named Ioiana who grew up in the American cemetery right outside of Florence. She was a runner and used to run through the headstones in the mornings, and I remember thinking at 16 that it would make a great setting for the book. Love & Gelato definitely bubbled up out of my love for Florence. Ponte Vecchio is my most favorite place on earth.
THE THIRD BOOK IN THIS SERIES IS DUE OUT IN NOVEMBER. HOW DO YOU CONTINUE TO TEASE MORE STORIES OUT OF THESE CHARACTERS AND PLACES?
I’m very inspired by settings and I often start out by thinking “Where do I want to write about?” In each case I’ve known where I wanted to set a book and had a vague idea of the character before I knew what the actual story would be.
DID YOU ALWAYS KNOW THIS WOULD BE A TRILOGY OR ARE THERE MORE BOOKS TO COME?
I had no plans for a trilogy, I just keep finding myself inspired by characters within my previous books. If they are easy to write I know that I want to know more about them! (Side note, I am so excited for Love & Olives to come out that I could cry!
DID YOU ALWAYS KNOW HOWARD WAS NOT GOING TO BE LINA’S BIOLOGICAL FATHER?
This actually didn’t happen until the final draft! All along I’d planned for Howard to be her biological father, then a few weeks before the final was due it all fell into place, and changed the story radically. I remember sending it to my editors with a note of, “So…there is a very major change in here.”
